    The rank of Sergeant Major disappeared from the US Army in the 1920s and was not reinstated until the 1960s. The Grade 1, Master Sergeant/First Sergeant, was the highest noncommissioned rank. First Sergeant was also only a positional rank to be held by the Grade 1 NCO occupying the position of First Sergeant within a company organization, Also, the US Army during WWII had two warrant officer ranks, WO-1 and WO-2.
